Pink's Bottom Line on Media, Money and Sports
Video sharing apps, best managed public companies and the Washington Football Team
In today’s newsletter, I discuss video sharing apps, the best managed public companies and the Washington Football Team.
MEDIA: Reddit Buys Dubsmash
As video sharing apps like TikTok soar in popularity, top tech firms have been looking to get in on that business, and today Reddit, a message board company, said that it would acquire video sharing app Dubsmash.
Don’t know Dubsmash? The app is looking to be an outlet for those groups who aren’t well represented on other social media platforms, and roughly 70% of its users are female.
Pink's Bottom Line
Rumors swirled recently that Facebook was looking to buy Dubsmash but that deal never happened.
Additionally, Instagram and Snap have recently introduced their own version of video sharing apps.
That underscores the perceived value of video sharing apps in general — and it appears that big tech will spend big money to be part of that market.
MONEY: Best Managed Companies
Microsoft is the country’s best run public company, according to rankings released from the Drucker Institute, a management firm based on the ideas of management guru Peter Drucker.
The rest of the top five reads like a who’s who’s list of top tech companies: Apple, IBM, Amazon and Alphabet, the parent company of Google, rank second through fifth, respectively, according to the Drucker Institute rankings.
Pink's Bottom Line
Big tech companies with long track records dominate the list of the best managed public companies, according to these rankings.
In fact, Procter & Gamble and Johnson & Johnson are the only two non-tech companies to crack the top ten list.
This list is yet another indication of just how dominant large tech companies have become in corporate America.
SPORTS: Washington Football Team
When the Washington Football Team beat the San Francisco 49ers yesterday, the team earned its fourth consecutive victory and catapulted in to first place in its division.
It’s quite a story of resilience and redemption for Washington considering where the team was just a few short months ago.
Pink's Bottom Line
Over the summer, the team changed its nickname from a racially insensitive one that many had been asking for the team to change for years.
The team also hired a new coach, Ron Rivera, who has battled cancer during the season.
Finally, its quarterback Alex Smith suffered a devastating, major leg injury two years ago only to be inserted into the lineup as a starter in mid-season — many thought he might never play again after that leg injury. (Note: Smith left Sunday’s game with a calf injury in the first half — it’s unclear if he will play next week.)
Despite all of that and though Washington isn’t a Super Bowl contender, the team now looks like it could make the post season, which would be a remarkable accomplishment.
