Pink's Bottom Line on Media, Money and Sports
Disney movie releases, consumer inflation expectations and the NFC North
In today’s newsletter, I discuss Disney movie releases, consumer inflation expectations and the NFC North.
MEDIA: Disney Movie Releases
In the first part of the year, Disney had also simultaneously released some of its movies to both theaters and Disney+, the company’s video streaming platform.
Pink's Bottom Line
Moviegoers have recently returned to the nation’s theaters after shunning cinemas because of the pandemic.
Notably, some of Disney’s recent theater-only releases have performed very well at the box office as a result.
As such, while video streaming platforms remain critical to the future growth of major media companies, traditional distribution of movies in theaters still remains a key revenue driver.
MONEY: Consumer Inflation Expectations
That survey showed that consumers expect inflation of 5.2% for the next twelve months, marking the tenth consecutive month of rising inflation expectations.
Pink's Bottom Line
Additionally, the government tomorrow releases its monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) report, which is expected to show higher prices at the consumer level yet again.
If that CPI report tomorrow happens to show sharply higher prices, that could soon put a crimp on consumer spending.
If consumer spending eventually does slow, that, in turn, could slow the entire economy as consumer spending accounts for roughly two-thirds of all economic activity in this country.
SPORTS: NFC North Woes
The good news for all four NFC North teams — Chicago, Detroit, Green Bay and Minnesota — is that they are all tied for the division lead after one week of the regular season.
The bad news? Each team lost its season opener, and they all sport records of 0-1 at the moment.
Pink's Bottom Line
While Chicago and Green Bay each lost their games handily, Detroit and Minnesota both mounted valiant comebacks in their games, only to fall short of victory.
While one week certainly isn’t a trend, it is an indicator that the NFC North could be a very weak division this season.
Still, look for Green Bay to win the division as the Packers have clearly the best quarterback among the four teams in the NFC North.
However, don’t sleep on the Detroit Lions, my sleeper pick this year, as the Lions appear to have a potent offense that could lead the team to a surprising number of wins this season.
