Pink's Bottom Line on Media, Money and Sports
Connected television, job openings and the NBA's Chris Paul
In today’s newsletter, I discuss connected television, job openings and the NBA’s Chris Paul.
MEDIA: Connected Television Viewing
Not surprisingly, viewers are embracing connected television, according to research from the Leichtman Research Group.
In television households in the United States, 39% watch connected television at least once a day, and 82% have at least one connected device, according to this research.
(Note: A Smart TV, a streaming device like a Roku or another device that connects directly to the Internet and streams video to viewers is considered connected television.)
Pink's Bottom Line
Notably, viewership of connected television skews younger with 54% of those in the age range of 18 to 34 watching connected television at least once a day, according to Leichtman.
As such, advertisers that are looking to reach a younger demographic could soon prefer connected television over traditional linear cable and satellite tv.
MONEY: Job Openings
Job openings in the United States hit an all-time high at the end of April, according to the government’s Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTs) released earlier today.
Job openings totaled 9.3 million on April 30, marking that all-time high since the government began tracking that data in 2000, according to the JOLTS report.
The accommodation and food services industry had the biggest number of new job openings, likely reflecting the re-opening of hotels and restaurants in many parts of the country.
Pink's Bottom Line
While the US labor market still has a long way to go to recover all jobs that were lost during the pandemic, the JOLTs report suggests that jobs are becoming more plentiful.
That’s also a very encouraging sign for the nation’s overall economic recovery as a strong labor market will drive a strong economy.
SPORTS: Chris Paul of the Phoenix Suns
Chris Paul, the veteran superstar guard of the Phoenix Suns, just might be the most important player in this year’s playoffs.
Consider that the Suns dispatched the Lakers in the first round of the playoffs four games to two, with Phoenix losing two games in that series when Paul appeared to suffer the most from a shoulder injury he sustained in Game 1 against the Lakers.
(Note: The Suns won Game 1 against the Lakers, and they lost Games 2 and 3.)
Pink's Bottom Line
With a healthy Paul, the Suns won the last three games of their series against the Lakers, and they won Game 1 of their second round series against the Denver Nuggets last night.
Paul has suffered a spate of cruelly timed injuries during the playoffs in his NBA career.
However, this just might be the year that Paul is healthy and that he finally gets a chance to lead a team to the NBA Finals.
