In today’s newsletter, I discuss video streaming, jobless claims and the NFC West. Also, I am speaking virtually next week at The Money Show in Las Vegas — please join me if you can.
MEDIA: Video Streaming Projections
Disney+ will overtake Netflix in total global subscribers at some point in 2025, according to projections from Digital TV research.
Pink’s Bottom Line
Notably, much of the growth in Disney+ subscribers will come outside of the United States and 43% of total subscribers will come from Asia by the beginning of 2026, according to Digital TV Research.
As such, growth in video streaming should persist for the next few years though much of that growth could come from Asia.
MONEY: Initial Jobless Claims
Weekly initial jobless claims rose for the third consecutive week, according to a government report released earlier today.
Initial jobless claims rose to 362,000 in the latest week from 351,000 last week — weekly claims had reached their pandemic lows in early September.
Pink’s Bottom Line
While initial jobless claims still hover near their lowest levels in 18 months, it is concerning that claims have moved higher for the past few weeks.
That suggests that the labor market, which has been strong for most of the year, might be running out of steam.
SPORTS: NFC West Divisional Play
The Rams and the Cardinals are two of only five teams in the entire league with 3-0 records — and the 49ers are 2-1 with their only loss coming against the Green Bay Packers last week on a last second field goal.
Pink’s Bottom Line
The Rams appear to have the strongest team — the team has a terrific defense led by defensive tackle Aaron Donald, and quarterback Matthew Stafford leads a dynamic offense.
Although the Cardinals are 3-0, they eked out a 34-33 win against the Minnesota Vikings, and they trailed the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars in the second half last week before coming back to win that game.
Seattle at 1-2 could easily be 2-1, but the Seahawks lost an overtime game against the Tennessee Titans in the second week of the season.
In any case, three teams from the NFC West could make the postseason this year though the Rams and the 49ers are almost certain to make it.
