Pink's Bottom Line on Media, Money and Sports
Top podcasts on Spotify, Cyber Week online spending and the NFL MVP award
In today’s newsletter, I discuss the top podcasts on Spotify, Cyber Week online spending and the NFL MVP award.
MEDIA: Top Podcasts on Spotify
Spotify today released Spotify 2021 Wrapped, which lists the most popular items streamed around the world on the service including podcasts.
According to Spotify, The Joe Rogan Experience and Call Her Daddy ranked first and second most streamed podcasts globally, respectively, this year.
Pink's Bottom Line
Spotify has begun emphasizing podcasts in addition to music on its streaming service in the past year or two.
Notably, both The Joe Rogan Experience and Call Her Daddy became exclusive to Spotify in the past twelve months as Spotify paid big money for both podcasts.
With the success of both of those podcasts on Spotify, it suggests that the streaming service could ultimately acquire more high-profile podcasts in the next few years.
MONEY: Cyber Week Online Spending
Online spending during Cyber Week, the five-day period from Thanksgiving through the following Monday, declined slightly this year compared to 2020, according to data from Adobe Analytics.
Pink's Bottom Line
While those spending numbers appear disappointing, online spending from November 1 to November 29 of this year is up 11.9% compared to 2020.
That suggests that consumers are still spending online but that they are not concentrating their purchases as much during Cyber Week as they have done in the past.
SPORTS: NFL MVP Award
At the beginning of December, there is usually a clear frontrunner for the NFL MVP award.
That simply isn’t the case this year — a number of players, all quarterbacks, are still in the running to become this season’s MVP.
Pink's Bottom Line
He’s followed by Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen at +420, Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers at +650 — both Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes and Arizona’s Kyler Murray are +750 to take home the award.
Look for Rodgers to separate himself from the others in the next few games and win his second consecutive MVP award.
