Pink's Bottom Line on Media, Money and Sports
Music catalog sale, central banks and interest rates and sleeper NFL teams
In today’s newsletter, I discuss a music catalog sale, central banks and interest rates and sleeper NFL teams.
MEDIA: Music Catalog Sale
Legendary rock star Bruce Springsteen reportedly is selling the rights to his music catalog of songs.
Pink's Bottom Line
Springsteen joins a growing number of artists who are selling the rights to their music catalogs — earlier this year, for example, Bob Dylan sold the rights to his catalog for reportedly around $300 million.
Expect more such music catalog sales from other artists in the coming months due largely to enormous revenue potential of music streaming.
The new rights holders to these music catalogs stand to earn significant revenue from streaming songs from these artists for the foreseeable future.
MONEY: Central Banks and Interest Rates
Earlier this week, the Federal Reserve signaled that it could raise interest rates three times in 2022, and earlier today the European Central Bank (ECB) said it is holding rates steady.
Pink's Bottom Line
Despite the different timing among major central banks, expect benchmark interest rates around the world to increase everywhere in 2022 for two reasons.
First, inflation has become a problem around the world, and higher interest rates will slow down the economy and help reign in inflation.
Second, labor markets around the world look to remain strong so higher interest rates next should not negatively impact employment in most countries.
SPORTS: Sleeper NFL Teams
With four games left in the NFL’s regular season, it appears clear that the best teams in pro football probably are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers.
There are a host of other strong teams not far behind these three like the Arizona Cardinals, Tennessee Titans, New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys.
Pink's Bottom Line
However, two teams in the NFC — the San Francisco 49ers and the Minnesota Vikings — are lurking that just might be sleepers that make a strong run in the playoffs this year, assuming both teams make the postseason.
Both teams have strong talent on both sides of the football, and each has a quarterback — Jimmy Garoppolo for the 49ers and Kirk Cousins for the Vikings — who are above average NFL starters.
