Pink's Bottom Line on Media, Money and Sports
Video streaming, top housing markets and the Los Angeles Dodgers
In today’s newsletter, I discuss video streaming, top housing markets and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
MEDIA: Streaming and More Streaming
CNN will soon become the latest entrant into the ultra-competitive world of video streaming.
Separately, according to The Wall Street Journal, Comcast and ViacomCBS reportedly discussed teaming up in video streaming overseas.
Pink's Bottom Line
These are just the latest signs that underscore the importance of video streaming to the future of big media.
Big media is competing with the likes of big tech, and with digital media companies like Netflix, which showed modest subscriber growth in its quarterly earnings report that the company released earlier today.
Competition is only going to get more fierce in video streaming as the pace of subscriber growth for most video streaming services is likely to continue to slow.
That’s why I expect tremendous pricing pressure on video streaming services by the end of the year, and why I also expect some consolidation among these services.
MONEY: Hottest Housing Markets
That index measures a number of factors in each housing market including economic vibrancy and quality of life to determine the best markets for potential homeowners at the moment.
Pink's Bottom Line
Notably, among the top ten housing markets in that index, all with the exception of Raleigh, North Carolina are small to midsize cities.
That’s a potential reflection of a new housing market dynamic that’s emerged since the coronavirus pandemic began.
Due to the pandemic, many Americans now are working from home and plan to continue working remotely for the foreseeable future, which has created strong demand for larger homes in smaller, less expensive markets.
As such, look for housing markets in many of these smaller and midsize cities to remain strong and to develop rapidly in the next few years.
SPORTS: Los Angeles Dodgers
In major league baseball, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants are in the middle of a regular season series that just might go a long way to help determine which team wins the very competitive National League West Division.
The Giants currently have a slim lead over the Dodgers in the division, but both teams will make the playoffs.
Pink's Bottom Line
In fact, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, the Dodgers at +390 are the favorites to win the World Series while San Francisco is only the eighth favorite at +1400.
Those odds make sense as the Dodgers lead the major leagues in run differential, which is perhaps the best statistic to determine the top team in baseball.
Look for the Dodgers only to get stronger for the rest of the season, and look for Los Angeles to repeat as World Series champs.
