Pink's Bottom Line on Media, Money and Sports
Trust in media, gas prices and Super Bowl favorites
In today’s newsletter, I discuss trust in media declining, gas prices climbing and Super Bowl favorites emerging.
MEDIA: Trust in Media
According to Gallup, that’s the second lowest percentage on record, trailing only a survey in 2016 when 32% said the same about the media’s ability to report news accurately and fairly.
Pink's Bottom Line
Notably and not surprisingly, that trust differed widely depending on political affiliation.
Among Democrats, 68% said they trusted the media to report news accurately and fairly while only 11% of Republicans said the same.
As such, it is further evidence of the polarization of America, which also deeply impacts the perception of media organizations in this country.
MONEY: Gas Prices
Gas prices, which have been rising for the past few months, continued their apparently inexorable climb upward, according to AAA.
For some context, the average price of a gallon of gas just one year ago was about $2.19, according to AAA.
Pink's Bottom Line
Those higher prices at the pump reflect higher crude oil prices, which also have been climbing recently.
As gas becomes more expensive, consumers feel the pinch, which could soon negatively impact their discretionary spending.
Additionally, sustained, higher gas prices are more signs that inflation at the consumer level is probably more than just transitory.
SPORTS: Super Bowl Favorites
The Buffalo Bills dismantled the Kansas City Chiefs last night 38-20 in a clash between two of the AFC’s top teams.
Buffalo’s record now stands at 4-1, while Kansas City slips to 2-3, trailing the Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC West by two games.
However, the sportsbooks still apparently like Kansas City’s chances to win the Super Bowl this year.
Pink's Bottom Line
While the Chiefs probably will make the playoffs this year, the team will have to improve its defense dramatically if it is to make a meaningful run in the postseason.
Interestingly, the Dallas Cowboys at +1300, tied as the seventh favorite to win the Super Bowl, just might be the most underrated team in the NFL.
The Cowboys have an explosive offense, and the team’s defense seems to get stronger every week.
