Pink's Bottom Line on Media, Money and Sports
Top OTT subscription video services, oil prices and the AFC playoffs
In today’s newsletter, I discuss top OTT subscription video services, oil prices and the AFC playoffs.
MEDIA: Top OTT Subscription Video Services
Familiar names topped the list of the top over-the-top (OTT) subscription video services, according to a survey of broadband households by Park Associates, a market research and consulting firm.
Pink's Bottom Line
Notably, Disney+ ranked third, overtaking Hulu, which is now ranked fourth but ranked third in 2020, according to Park Associates — ESPN+ ranked sixth.
As Disney wholly owns Disney+ and ESPN+ and is majority owner of Hulu, Disney appears to be faring best among traditional media companies when it comes to streaming.
MONEY: Oil Prices
Oil prices around the world declined sharply today likely over fears about the potential negative impact the Omicron variant could have on oil demand.
Lower oil prices, though, should eventually translate into lower gas prices, which would be welcome for consumers who are coping with steep inflation.
Pink's Bottom Line
Still, the decline in oil prices is worrying as it suggests that the oil market’s concerns signal a deeper problem.
Specifically, the oil market’s reaction signals that the overall health of the entire global economy could be at stake due to the rapidly spreading Omicron variant.
SPORTS: AFC Playoffs
With just a few weeks remaining in the NFL regular season, the playoff picture in the AFC is beginning to emerge.
The Kansas City Chiefs now own the top seed and the best record in the conference after starting the season slowly — the Chiefs also appear unlikely to relinquish that top seed.
Pink's Bottom Line
Two teams to watch in the AFC — the Indianapolis Colts and the Los Angeles Chargers — are currently the fifth and sixth seeds in the conference, respectively.
The Colts are led by star running back Jonathan Taylor while the Chargers are led by second year standout quarterback Justin Herbert.
Either team could make a deep run in the playoffs, assuming both actually do make the post season — both the Colts and the Chargers at this stage are probably the biggest threat to the Chiefs for the AFC title.
