Pink's Bottom Line on Media, Money and Sports
Top items and takeaways of the week from the worlds of media, money and sports plus my Super Bowl pick
Here are the top items and takeaways of the week from the worlds of media, money and sports plus my Super Bowl pick.
MEDIA
Linear television viewership of Tuesday’s State of the Union Address fell sharply this year.
Pink’s Bottom Line: Those lower viewership numbers reflect that much of the younger demographic consumes news and political information digitally, which means Presidential candidates for the 2024 election will spend heavily on digital platforms to reach that demo.
Pink’s Bottom Line: AMC is looking for ways to change the moviegoing experience to attract more viewers into theaters as movie attendance slumped during the pandemic and has to recover fully.
Pink’s Bottom Line: Notably, from that study, it appears that the political biases and viewpoints of its journalists played less of a role in impartiality of coverage than that fundamental lack of understanding of economics.
MONEY
Pink’s Bottom Line: Despite higher inflation and an overall uncertain economic backdrop, consumers are still opening their wallets, which bodes well for the overall US economy as consumer spending accounts for roughly two-thirds of overall economic activity in this country.
Pink’s Bottom Line: Although many employers are requiring workers to spend more days each week in the office, employees are not acquiescing to that request, suggesting that the work-from-home trend remains strong.
Pink’s Bottom Line: If the CPI shows a continuation of a disinflationary trend and if retail sales are robust, that augurs well for overall economic performance in 2023.
SPORTS
Pink’s Bottom Line: Sports betting will continue to grow rapidly in this country for the next decade as more states legalize betting on sports.
Pink’s Bottom Line: If Mahomes and the Chiefs win the Super Bowl this Sunday, Mahomes will begin to stake his claim as the best quarterback in the history of the NFL.
Pink’s Bottom Line: The Phoenix Suns, who acquired superstar Kevin Durant in a trade this week, now are the second favorites to capture the NBA title, but the Milwaukee Bucks, the third favorites, quietly made a move to acquire Jae Crowder, an excellent role player, which makes the Bucks the team to beat.
Super Bowl Pick
Kansas City Chiefs (+1.5) vs. Philadelphia Eagles
This game will come down to something very simple — the health of the quarterback on each team.
Mahomes is recovering from a high ankle sprain while Jalen Hurts, quarterback of the Eagles, is nursing a shoulder injury.
I expect Hurts to struggle more with an injured shoulder than Mahomes will with his hurt ankle.
As such, Kansas City, my preseason pick to win the Super Bowl, will beat the Eagles outright and win their second Super Bowl in the past four years.
