Pink's Bottom Line on Media, Money and Sports
Top apps, best and worst places to buy a house and US Open golf favorite
In today’s newsletter, I talk about favorites including the favorite apps to download and the favorite to win next week’s US Open men’s golf tournament among other items.
MEDIA: Most Downloaded Apps
More users worldwide downloaded TikTok, the short video social media app, than any other non-gaming app in August, according to data from Sensor Tower, an app tracking research firm.
The usual suspects like Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat were also among the top ten most downloaded apps, according to Sensor Tower.
Pink's Bottom Line
Interestingly, Zoom, the ubiquitous video meeting service, ranked second, and a Google competitor to Zoom, Google Meet, ranked sixth, according to Sensor Tower.
Zoom, and likely Google Meet, are beneficiaries from the work from home/stay at home trend that has emerged during the pandemic.
Their app download popularity only underscores the durability of this trend.
MONEY: Best and Worst Places to Buy a House
WalletHub, a diversified personal finance online destination, recently released a study to determine the best and worst places to buy a home these days.
Boise claimed the top spot as the best place to buy a house, according to WalletHub, with Seattle coming in second place.
However, I was most interested in the worst places to buy a house right now. The locale that WalletHub ranked as the worst place? Miami Beach. The second worst? Baltimore.
Pink's Bottom Line
Miami Beach ranked at the bottom in terms of the average of days it took a home to sell, while Baltimore homes showed a high rate of foreclosure, according to WalletHub data.
WalletHub’s study appears very comprehensive, and considers many different factors to determine its ratings.
It shows, though, that traditional metrics — like average days to sell a home and foreclosure rates — remain important considerations for any potential home buyer.
SPORTS: US Open Golf
While the US Open tennis tournament concludes this weekend, the US Open men’s golf tournament begins a week from today.
Missing from that event will be Brooks Koepka, the two-time defending champion of the US Open. Koepka is struggling with injury issues.
Pink's Bottom Line
Koepka would have been one of the favorites to win the tournament this year, and his absence opens up the field for a number of other golfers to win — but none is more likely than world number one Dustin Johnson.
Look for Johnson, who has only won major in his career, to win another at this year’s US Open and to extend his recent torrid pace.
Johnson earned $15 million as the winner of the FedEx Cup last week, won the Travelers tournament in June, the Northern Trust tournament in August and finished runner-up in the last major played, the PGA Championship, last month.
