Pink's Bottom Line on Media, Money and Sports
Podcast listeners, mortgage rates and the Dallas Cowboys
In today’s newsletter, I discuss podcast listeners, mortgage rates and the Dallas Cowboys. Also, a reminder — I am speaking virtually at The Money Show tomorrow. It’s free, and you can register to watch me here.
MEDIA: Podcast Listeners
For some reason I missed it, but last Thursday apparently was International Podcast Day.
Perhaps to celebrate that day, Statista released results from a survey it conducted about where the most people listen to podcasts.
According to that survey, it’s Sweden, where 47% of those surveyed said that they had listened to a podcast at least once in the past year.
Pink's Bottom Line
For some context, 34% of those surveyed in the United States said that they had listened to a podcast at least once in the past year — 19% in China said the same.
Those survey results indicate that the number of podcast listeners can still grow significantly in this country considering that it’s estimated, for example, that 80% of the US population watches television daily.
As such, look for more podcasts, more podcast advertising and more consolidation in the podcasting industry for the foreseeable future.
MONEY: Mortgage Rates
Mortgage rates, while still hovering near historically low levels, look like they are inching higher.
Pink's Bottom Line
Although home prices have moved sharply higher in the past year, homes have been somewhat affordable because of these low mortgage rates.
However, with rates now apparently moving higher, homes could become less affordable, which, in turn, could put pressure on home prices.
If that does happen, the overall housing market — a stalwart of the economy during the pandemic — could soon begin to weaken.
SPORTS: Dallas Cowboys
With the NFL season now finishing the fourth week of the regular season, it’s becoming clear that the Dallas Cowboys are the class of the NFC East, one of the weaker divisions in professional football.
The Cowboys beat the previously undefeated Carolina Panthers rather convincingly Sunday, and they are now 3-1 on the year and they are in first place in their division.
Pink's Bottom Line
Add to Prescott’s performance a surprisingly stout defense and a resurgent Ezekiel Elliot, the franchise running back for Dallas, and the Cowboys seem to have a recipe for success this year.
Notably, because Dallas plays in such a weak division, the Cowboys should easily make the playoffs this year, and even host a game or two.
