Pink's Bottom Line on Media, Money and Sports
Video streaming stats, Reddit raises money and NFL running backs
In today’s newsletter, I discuss video streaming stats, Reddit’s money raise and NFL running backs.
MEDIA: Video Streaming Stats
Video streaming, which surged in popularity in the past two years, continues to attract viewers around the world.
According to Conviva, a video streaming research and insights company, global video streaming grew 13% last quarter compared to the second quarter of 2020.
Pink's Bottom Line
Notably, video streaming surged in Africa — up 79% — and in South America — up 192% — in the second quarter of this year compared to the second quarter of 2020, according to Conviva.
Meanwhile, video streaming managed to grow 2% in North America last quarter compared to the second quarter last year — that’s quite an achievement considering that the second quarter of 2020 saw a dramatic increase in streaming due to the pandemic.
As such, the Conviva data confirms what has become apparent — video streaming has enduring popularity.
MONEY: Reddit Raises Money
Reddit, the social media platform that has become known recently for its online discussions of stocks among retail investors, said today that it is raising more money.
Pink's Bottom Line
Reddit, through its discussion board called WallStreetBets, has influenced the recent trading of some stocks including AMC and GameStop.
Retail investors — through forums like those on Reddit — can move prices of stocks, occasionally at the consternation of institutional investors on Wall Street.
That shows the overall influence of the social media platform, and it also underscores the power of the retail investor in the past couple of years.
SPORTS: NFL Running Backs
With the kickoff to the NFL regular season now less than a month from now, three running backs — Derrick Henry of Tennessee, Dalvin Cook of Minnesota and Nick Chubb of Cleveland — could have outsized influence on their teams and their playoff prospects.
According the FanDuel Sportsbook, those are the three running backs with highest projected season rushing yardage totals for next year.
The over/under on regular season rushing yards for Henry is 1,539.5 — it’s 1,399.5 for Cook, and 1,350.5 for Chubb, according to FanDuel.
Pink's Bottom Line
As the NFL has become a quarterback league over the past two decades, the importance of the running back has declined.
However, for teams like the Titans, Vikings and Browns where the quarterback play is good, but not necessarily elite, a top running back is still essential.
In fact, I like all three teams to make the playoffs this year, and for the Browns and the Titans to even vie for the AFC championship — that will happen, though, only if Henry, Cook and Chubb all stay healthy.
