Pink’s Bottom Line on Media, Money and Sports
Podcast listeners, Job Quality Index and the NFL playoff picture
In today’s newsletter, I discuss podcast listeners, Job Quality Index and the NFL playoff picture.
MEDIA: Podcast Listeners
The United States and Sweden lead the way when it comes to the percentage of Internet users that listen to podcasts.
In Sweden, home of Spotify, 34.6% of that country’s Internet users listened to a podcast monthly, according to eMarketer.
Pink's Bottom Line
Across 18 countries tracked by eMarketer, the number of podcast listeners is forecast to grow from 383.7 million in 2021 to 504.9 million in 2024.
That would a 31.6% increase over the next three years or about 9.5% growth on an annual basis.
As such, the podcasting market, which has been growing rapidly across the world, still has plenty of room to grow.
MONEY: Job Quality Index
The government releases its monthly unemployment report this Friday, which will provide a look at job creation in October.
While that report could show a marked increase in job creation last month compared to September, the composition of those news jobs will be important to analyze.
Pink's Bottom Line
If the bulk of those new jobs are low paying, it indicates that the quality of these new jobs is not necessarily high.
If that trend continues in October, it suggests that the red hot US jobs market might be a bit cooler than perceived by many.
SPORTS: NFL Playoff Picture
If the NFL playoffs were held today, the Wild Card round — essentially the first round of the playoffs — would boast some very compelling games, particularly in the NFC.
For some background, seven teams in each conference make the playoffs this year, and only one team in each conference gets a first round bye.
Pink's Bottom Line
Right now, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, the two favorites to win the NFC this year are the Bucs at +310 followed by the Rams at +330.
While the playoff picture undoubtedly will change by the end of the season, it does indicate that a top NFC team could be eliminated in the Wild Card round — that also points to the importance of earning that coveted first round bye.
