Pink's Bottom Line on Media, Money and Sports
Baseball video streaming network, China's economy and the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars
In today’s newsletter, I discuss a possible nationwide baseball video streaming network, China's economy and the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars.
MEDIA: Baseball Video Streaming Network
Major League Baseball (MLB) reportedly is considering a national streaming network for baseball games.
According the a story in The New York Post, MLB could launch such a service as early as 2023.
Pink's Bottom Line
Notably, that service would includes games of hometown teams — in other words, New York subscribers could watch Yankees and Mets games on this service instead of subscribing to cable television.
However, according to that story, the MLB is in talks only about this video streaming service.
If indeed such a video streaming service launches, it could impact cable television subscriptions in major sports markets and it could give a boost to declining national viewership of baseball games.
MONEY: China’s Economy
Notably, growth from the third quarter of this year compared to the second quarter of this year was essentially flat, reflecting a weaker overall economy in China.
Pink's Bottom Line
China’s economy is struggling on a number of fronts related to the pandemic and from recent government actions, which both apparently are causing the manufacturing and construction sectors to slow.
China’s economy will still likely slow further for the foreseeable future though its overall growth rate still tops that of most developed economies.
SPORTS: Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jacksonville Jaguars beat the Miami Dolphins Sunday 23-20 on a last second field goal ending Jacksonville’s 20-game losing streak dating back to the first game of the 2020 season.
Pink's Bottom Line
Jacksonville has played several close games this year — the team actually led the unbeaten Arizona Cardinals in the third quarter of their game in Week 3 — and the Jaguars have mostly been competitive all season.
The Jags have a bye week next week, and then play the Seattle Seahawks without their starting quarterback Russell Wilson in Week 8 — that could be Jacksonville’s second win of the year.
Look for Jacksonville to string together a decent record for the rest of the season, and while the team probably won’t challenge for the division title, they will win a lot more games than most anticipate.
