Pink's Bottom Line on Media, Money and Sports
Media and sports betting, housing insecurity and the NFL quarterback carousel
In today’s newsletter, I discuss a deal media and sports betting partnership, housing insecurity in the United States and the latest on the NFL quarterback carousel.
MEDIA: DISH Network and DraftKings
DISH Network, the satellite television service, is teaming up with DraftKings, a sports gaming company.
The two firms announced today that DISH subscribers who use the company’s Hopper TV platform will have direct access to sports betting information from DraftKings in the Hopper platform.
Pink's Bottom Line
It is just the the latest deal that shows partnership and cooperation between media and sports betting companies.
One notable deal is between Sinclair Broadcasting and Bally’s where some of Sinclair’s regional sports networks now carry the Bally’s brand.
As sports betting gains more traction throughout the United States, look for even more partnerships and cooperative efforts between media and sports betting companies.
MONEY: Housing Insecurity
While the overall US housing market has held up well during the coronavirus pandemic, housing insecurity for many Americans has emerged as a major problem in the past year.
According to a report released earlier this week from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), many homeowners are struggling to make mortgage payments — two million homeowners are three or months behind in payments, an increase of 250% in December compared to December of 2019.
Pink's Bottom Line
Additionally, the CFPB reports that 18.1% of all renter households were behind on their rent payments as of December of last year, including 27.1% of those households with $25,000 or less in income.
The coronavirus pandemic has disproportionately hurt Americans with lower incomes and that is clearly reflected in this CFPB data.
As such, it makes the government’s approval and implementation of a new fiscal stimulus package, which would give those lower income households much needed cash, even more crucial.
SPORTS: NFL Quarterback Carousel
The New York Jets, who have the second overall pick in this year’s quarterback rich NFL draft, said today that they would answer calls from other teams about their current quarterback, Sam Darnold.
Darnold, who the Jets drafted with the third overall pick in the 2018 draft, has had an uneven three years with the team.
In his 38 starts with the Jets, he has thrown 45 touchdowns but he’s also been intercepted 39 times.
Pink's Bottom Line
Darnold simply might need a fresh start with a new team as the Jets have struggled in many areas during his three seasons in New York.
Since the Jets do have the second overall pick in the draft, I suspect that they will draft a quarterback with that selection, and trade Darnold for additional draft picks.
That said, the Jets also could package that second overall draft pick along with Darnold — and a lot more — for a top quarterback like Seattle’s Russell Wilson or Houston’s Deshuan Watson.
