Pink's Bottom Line on Media, Money and Sports
News sources and vaccinations, ETF flows and Notre Dame football
In today’s newsletter, I discuss news sources and vaccinations, ETF flows and Notre Dame football.
MEDIA: News Sources and Vaccinations
If you rely on national news organizations or public health organizations for your coronavirus related news, you are among most likely to have received at least one coronavirus vaccine dose at this point, according to a recent survey from Pew Research.
Pink's Bottom Line
Conversely, according to that survey, among those who say they relied on the former President and his White House coronavirus task force for their coronavirus news, only 59% say that they have received at least one dose of the vaccine to this point.
Notably, among those who rely on their personal connections for their pandemic news information, 58% say they have received at least one vaccine shot, according to that survey.
As such, it appears that a person’s news source for coronavirus information is a good predictor of vaccination status.
MONEY: ETF Outflows
With the broader US stock market last Monday suffering its steepest loss since last May, investors pulled money out of US-listed exchange-traded funds (ETFs), according to ETF.com.
Pink's Bottom Line
One of the most commonly held ETFs, the SPY, which tracks the S&P 500 Index, alone saw $5.8 billion in redemptions, according to ETF.com.
These ETF outflows suggest that investors just might pull money out of the market quickly if there’s another sharp decline in the market.
SPORTS: Notre Dame Football
With Notre Dame’s 41-13 victory over Wisconsin Saturday, Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly earned his 106th victory as coach of the Fighting Irish — that makes Kelly the winningest head coach in the school’s history.
Kelly passed the legendary Knute Rockne, who had 105 wins as coach of Notre Dame — Lou Holtz, who coached Notre Dame from 1986 to 1996, had 100 wins during his tenure.
Pink's Bottom Line
Notably, with Notre Dame’s victory Monday, the Fighting Irish now are 4-0 on the season, and control their own destiny for the College Football Playoff (CFP).
Notre Dame, currently ranked 12th in the country, plays Cincinnati, ranked 8th, next week.
If Notre Dame wins that game, the Fighting Irish should be favored in all of their games for the rest of season, and the team could run the table to finish the year unbeaten.
If that happens, Notre Dame will make the CFP — likely along with two SEC teams — and that means that at least three of the Power 5 conferences won’t be represented in the CFP this year.
