Weekly Recap: Pink's Bottom Line on Media, Money and Sports
Top items and takeaways from this week's newsletters
Here are the top items and takeaways from this week’s newsletters. I hope everyone has a great holiday weekend.
MEDIA
As the broadcast and cable networks struggle to cobble together their fall seasons, Netflix, at least for the moment, keeps chugging right along with new content.
NewsNation, a new national newscast, debuted this week on cable channel WGN America. Will this new newscast, which says it will be straight news only with no opinion, be able to attract a large national viewing audience?
Viewers age 35 to 54 and those age 55 and above were the two age groups that spent the greatest percentage of their television viewing time watching streaming services, according to a data from Nielsen. That’s a fascinating development and it suggests that streaming really is going mainstream.
MONEY
I like to look at Temple University’s Covid19 Tourism Index, which measures the recovery of the tourism sector using data and analytics across multiple sources and industries. As of last week, the overall index in the United States stood at 31.95, down sharply from its level of 96.49 on February 1, but up from its lows of just above 18 in mid-April. Here’s what it means.
Net inflows into most types of Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) increased last week, with the exception of one sector, according to data from ETFdb.com. The ETF sector that saw net outflows in the past week? Real estate. Investors pulled more money our of real estate ETFs than they put in last week. Here’s what’s happening.
If you’re traveling by car this holiday weekend, you could be seeing the lowest price on a gallon of gas on a Labor Day weekend in 16 years, according to Gas Buddy. Gas Buddy estimates that the average price of a gallon of regular gas will cost you $2.19 this holiday weekend — that’s 37 cents a gallon less than what it cost at the same time last year. Will that be an indicator of lower prices at the pump the rest of the year?
SPORTS
The running back position in the NFL doesn’t look nearly as important as it did just a generation ago, and in today's NFL the fortunes of most teams aren’t tied to a dominant running back.
Japan’s Naomi Osaka today advanced to the fourth round of the US Open tennis tournament. While Osaka currently ranks as the ninth-best women's tennis player in the world, she holds an even more valuable ranking — she ranks as the world’s top paid female athlete. Here’s why her appeal transcends borders.
Tiz the Law, the winner of the Belmont Stakes in June, is the overwhelming favorite to win the 146th running of the Kentucky Derby this Saturday. Tiz the Law is currently a 3 to 5 favorite, according to US Racing. If those odds hold, he would be the most overwhelming favorite in more than 20 years.
