Weekly Recap: Pink's Bottom Line on Media, Money and Sports
The best and most interesting items from the week
Here’s a recap of top items and takeaways from our newsletter this week in case you missed them or didn’t have the time to read them. Have a great weekend!
MEDIA: Live Nation, NFL Ratings and VENN
Live Nation Entertainment is giving hope to the beleaguered live events portion of the entertainment industry, which I believe will be critical for a solid recovery of the industry as a whole.
In January, when we’re analyzing the highest rated broadcasts for all of 2020, look for the NFL to become even more dominant.
VENN, a new, 24-hour e-sports, gaming and entertainment television network that launched last week, could emerge as a media success story in the middle of a pandemic.
MONEY: 5G Winner, Investors Stay the Course and Private Markets Preferred
While it’s hard to predict which one of three big wireless carriers will emerge as the winner in the push for 5G, one winner is crystal clear to me – the American consumer, at least for the next 12 to 18 months.
As we look back on the pandemic and its impact on investors five or ten years from now, I think we’ll see that investors stayed the course, invested for the long term and emerged from the pandemic with solid retirement portfolios.
As long as the access to capital in the private markets stays plentiful, which it looks like it will for the foreseeable future, then I believe companies will prefer the private over the public route despite a very strong 2020 for Initial Public Offerings (IPOs).
SPORTS: High School Football Indicator, Sports Betting and the Men’s Tennis GOAT Debate
It’s worth watching what happens with the high school football seasons in Florida, Ohio and Texas as decisions made in these states could set the tone for the rest of the country. I'm not optimistic.
NBA and baseball playoffs should provide plenty of wagering opportunities and could mitigate any declines in overall sports betting from fewer football games being played this fall.
When all is said and done, I think Novak Djokovic will be considered the best men’s tennis player of all time. He’ll win the most major titles, and he’ll have a better win-loss record against each of his rivals.
